Hi, As I say my Grandad has brought a Rolls and wants me to drive it for him to and from Weddings and for private hire etc. I know I have to get a suit etc but that is pretty much all I know ha ha! Can you give me advice on becoming the driver as in do I have to put the brides dress in the car, when and who do I open the door for first etc etc? All help grateful. Thanks
My Grandad is 75 he doesnt know either LOL

The Bride always travels seated behind the front passenger seat, and that seat is positioned as far forward as practicable for maximum foot/dress room.
The Bride will normally scoop the dress in herself, but make sure no part of it gets trapped in the door.

After the passengers are in the car, the chauffeur always walks around the back of the car to his/her door. The reason for that used to be that it wouldn't do for the occupants to see the 'staff', in reality, it gives you chance to check that the doors are closed properly!

On arrival at the venue, always stop with the Bride on the pavement side.

The Bride is the star of the show and is therefore always the last out of the car, if she gets out first, she has to stand at the roadside waiting for her escort, normally her father. By getting out last, she can also be helped with her dress by dad.

Always switch the engine off on arrival and never start it when members of the wedding party are standing behind the car, you don't want 6.75 ltrs of engine blowing soot onto mothers outfit!

Finally, a good chauffeur never breaks the speed limit, if you're asked to 'step on it' exaggerate your driving, accelerate hard up to the limit and brake late, it gives the impression of speed.

I'm very excited about my wedding but no one else seems to be so I'm feeling pretty disappointed and lonely. My fiance of course is looking forward to it, but being a man he's not as into the wedding stuff as I am! For some reason, my mum just isn't interested. She doesn't want to be the maid of honour because she says she doesn't want to be in the wedding party or have to 'do' anything. I feel pretty disappointed because she's usually not that kind of person and she has even been a bridesmaid in other people's weddings. She said she'll do it but doesn't want to.

My fiance and I have had a very short amount of time to plan the wedding. He's from the USA and he's in the process of permanently immigrating here (Australia). He's lived here numerous times but we've also had to spend months and sometimes years apart. We thought we would probably have to get married at the registry/courthouse because of the limited time but we looked at reception places just in case there were any short term openings. Amazingly there was and we got a really lovely place for cheap because they were happy to fill in empty dates rather than have no business. I have my dress but he still needs to get his suit and we need to hire a photographer, rent cars and organise a little honeymoon. We're excited that it's all coming together and that we'll have a proper wedding to remember, but my mum doesn't seem to care.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Awww, Im so sorry for you. Its supposed to be the most special day of your life and your own mother is actually saying she 'doesnt want to DO anything'!!!

Im not including my mother in any of the preparations, but that is because I have the best step mother in the world that I would rather spend time with and she is even more excited than i am.

The fact that your mother was prepared to be in other peoples weddings but not yours is saying something I think… would it be possible that she doesnt approve of your wedding? It might help to understand what her reticence is…

Good luck, i hope you have a good friend or something that you can help plan things with. :-)

As any guy who idolizes law enforcement, I have always wanted my own police car, so I've decided to build one of those early to mid light blue 90's NYPD caprices.

I know that there are certain parameters as to making the car legal, such as marking it "out of service" and not having a working siren/light bar while driving. (That’s how Hollywood transports there fake cruisers, Dodge also uses those parameters to show off their police charger that is marked “police”, (and has a light bar). I intend to build and paint it legally; however I've seen with others who have built their own cruisers that have changed out the colored lenses over the light bar for clear ones (I can figure why however, is that necessary as long as the lights are disconnected?)

I live in North Carolina where blue lights are illegal, and to have a red light you must be a fireman, or private ambulance. Now I’m not worried about confusion because it’s been over 10 years since a NC agency used those old caprices, nobody around here has ever seen a cop car with red lights on it, and “out of service” will be seen everywhere “police” will be. I will most likely rent it out for proms and weddings, and things like that, so some type of “for hire” markings will be somewhere.

My question is what would be the best way to show to the local police in the event of a traffic stop, or road block, or something else of that nature, that I am actually operating this vehicle legally, because the power to the accessories are disconnected, and the police markings are closely followed by “out of service”?
Ah thank you Lastdude, for digging that up, I had seen that once before, I also enjoyed Nathan W’s answer, and the general statute you’ve provided seems to substantiate both of our ideas, both in disconnecting the power, and taking the bulbs out. In other countries I’ve seen these rentable NYPD cruisers (understandably with no legal problems), they switch out the red covers with clear ones, I also just thought of painting the lenses solid so that no light could get through, but the bulb idea covers that. I also like the website you provided (lastdude) I’m considering addressing them directly (they would know) thank you.
Oh Lastdude, do you have a special license plate for that truck because I seemed to remember somewhere seeing a Historical police, and historical Fire truck plate. However I also considered that the for hire plate would be more fitting

To be honest with you I don't think it legal to put lights like that on your car at all but I may be mistaken. You might check out www.galls.com for parts and stuff. Maybe they have something on their site showing what is legal and such.

Does everyone hire a car with a chauffeur for their weddings these days? Has anyone chosen to hire a nice car and have a friend drive to the church/reception? Or is that just a recipe for disaster?

Problem with this scenario is that friends usually like to drink and party and behave like guests. Chauffeurs have no such distractions :)

So me and my fiance have eventually set a date for our wedding, may 2010. Found it difficult to decide on where to be married as everywhere is sooo expensive! Eventually decided on a place called Piperdam (www.piperdam.com) the first venue we agreed on. We paid the deposit to make the booking but since then i cant help looking at other venues and thinking they look better!! I had originally wanted my dream wedding of a castle in scotland, beautiful gardens, exclusive use, but we dont and our parents dont have £20k to have such a grand day. Piperdam is still gonna cost us too, its not cheap but is very picturesque like i wanted. I want my guests to be like “wow”, im a bit of a show off and want to impress. Part of me is being realistic and is just excited about being married to the person i love and not care where it is but then the “cinderella” part of me is wanting the wow factor.
Also if any one can give me some money saving tips for weddings would be grateful!

I am getting a wedding cake from marks and spencer and decorating it myself (£150 max)
Hiring a part time photographer who is keen to build up his portfolio (£600 for full day from getting ready to first dance) I was originally quoted £2k from another photographer
Found a piper online who plays for free for sheer enjoyment, just pay travel expenses and a few cokes.
Not having wedding cars, gonna borrow a friends fancy car and have ribbon on it.
Making my own invitations, brother in law is designing them, father in law does calligraphy.
Using silk flowers for bridesmaids as you can pick them up quite cheap on ebay.
Friend who is makeup artist and hair stylist is doing my hair and makeup on day.
Getting my designer wedding dress made by milly bridal for £200 quid than pay for original at £1200.
Having favours, miniture jackdaniels £1 each and sweets for girls
Having a friend DJ at night (hopefully)
Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance xx

Piperam looks lovely for a wedding. Sounds like you are doing great budget wise cutting where you can.

So I was recently hired by a Convention Center in Southern California as a Banquet server. The center hosts all sorts of events from huge Car Shows to Computer geek products release annuals, weddings, club parties, etc.

I used to work at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. And sure, we would cater once in a while (we did frat dinners, sorority dinners, engagement parties, big birthdays) but the food is informal, the presentation is semi formal, but the place was big and loud and relaxed. Thats my experience.

I'm fine with working with people- not a problem.

But what sort of skill or etiquette should I be brushing up on to prepare for All these kinds of events, and all levels of food serving (apps, entrees, stand up, informal, formal, drinks, etc.) throughout the day.

Days can start anywhere from 6am to 9pm and on… So Ill be serving the full range of daily meals (morning, noon, night, cocktails)

Any advice regarding Banquets/ Banquet serving/ Catering will be greatly appreciated.

Personal appearance and cleanliness. Pants secured properly at your waist. Clothing clean and pressed.
Polished shoes, neat & clean hands, face, buffed or clear polished finger nails and please–secure your hair neatly. Keep your hands away from your person: hair, nose, mouth, etc. People notice. No obtrusive piercings.

Politeness, politeness, politeness.

Don't serve food with hands that have removed dirty dishes without washing hands first…sanatization, sanatization, etc.
No phones, food, gum chewing, food nibbles, conservations…

You are a "silent server" Unless instructed by your supervisor to be otherwise.

Follow instructions concerning food cleanliness and safety.
Know how to properly set a table for various functions and know how to serve and remove food.

Follow instructions by supervisor cheerfully. Don't be a clock watcher when supervisor asks you to do something. Observe closely when procedures are demonstrated and/or explained.
Take notes if necessary.

Know where restrooms, phones, exits, closest emergency places (hospitals, dentist, er) airports, taxi, sporting events, parking hotel, etc. Chances are you'll never need to know but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Now, last, but not least, remember this: you are on the job and being paid to do your job well; goofing off, arriving late, leaving early, shirking your duties or doing your job without your best effort is, in effect, stealing from your employer.

Customers may not comment when you do a job well, but they will comment if you do a job badly or with attitude. Bottom line, your employer is listening and watching.

Your questions suggests you want to be successful at this occupation. Your first impression was favorable or you would not have been hired. Keep up the good work!

PS personal note: You can't watch a purse/briefcase/fanny pack and don't want bulging pants pockets–Invest in an unobtrusive body/document carrier to be hidden on your person for credit card, emergency money, license, insurance information and just the essential keys. Carry a throw away wallet with a few dollars.

Anti-alien protest in Lakewood called off

Organizer cites safety concerns
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 08/16/07
BY ZACH PATBERG
TOMS RIVER BUREAU

LAKEWOOD — The organizer of a scheduled rally against illegal immigration has canceled the event, deciding there was not enough security to protect the crowd and speakers.

Diane Reeves of Lakewood, who planned the protest for Aug. 25 at the town square on Clifton Avenue, pointed to rumors that such gangs as MS 13 and the Latin Kings, as well as some out-of-town militant groups, would disrupt the rally. That, coupled with the conflict that occurred at a similar protest last month in Morristown, convinced Reeves that the handful of officers Police Chief Robert Lawson promised to provide would not be enough protection.

"I was nervous that if something happened, what were we supposed to do?" Reeves said.

She and other rally supporters voiced resentment that the township had not agreed to assign more members of its 125-strong police force. They pointed to Morristown, which supplied a strong police presence at the protest over the same issue in late July. Five people were ar-rested and two were slightly injured at that event.

"I was very upset when I heard," said Carmen Morales, vice chairwoman of the advocacy group You Don't Speak For Me, who was supposed to speak at the rally. "I feel Lakewood is like a sanctuary for illegal immigrants . . . and (the police) seem to protect them."

Officials relieved

Mayor Raymond Coles stressed that the Morristown rally was municipally sponsored, as opposed to the privately organized one in Lakewood. Lawson said he could not justify taking more officers off patrol duty, and the township could not afford the overtime.

Beyond that, Coles and Lawson agreed with Reeves' decision to cancel.

"I'm relieved," Lawson said. "Lakewood has a large number of undocumented residents . . . and now you're going to have a group in the center of town speaking out against illegal aliens. So it's possible there'd be friction between the two factions that could lead to confrontation."

Coles said, "This is a very emotional, heated issue and bringing two very emotional groups together might cause problems."

Estimates of the number of illegal immigrants in Lakewood range from 5,000 to 20,000. A 2006 estimate by the U.S. Census bureau put the township's population at almost 70,000.

Lawson added that it was common for organizers to pay for off-duty police officers as protection at rallies. The Lakewood rally was expected to draw up to 500 people and was to have five speakers, including two family members of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Reeves, who has never organized a rally before, now plans to find an indoor venue in another town to hold the protest, saying that since the cancellation she has heard from angry supporters offering contributions toward the cost of a demonstration.

"Look at the 100,000 illegals getting protection to march down the street everywhere else," she said. "But me, a citizen, has no right because of safety issues."

Just another example of the liberals protecting the illegal scumbags. If that town had any real intestinal fortitude, it would round up all the illegal scumbags, and ship them back to the garbage-dump of a country they came from. Then there wouldn't be any need of a rally. Problem solved.

Many brides go in a limusine.

How about grooms?

However incredible this may sound, I've only attended two weddings: my cousin's and brother's.

My female cousin hired a limusine. I was staying in her house when she got married. I don't know how her fiance got to the church, though.

My brother hired a black Mercedes.

How do other grooms usually choose to go the church (or where the ceremony will take place)?

Women may also reply to this if they want.

However, please state if you are male or female.

Lets see I have seen everything,

Limos, reg, cars, walk to the church (yes we were close enough) and of course the most memorable - a fire truck.

I really want a 1959 or 1960 Cadillac De ville sedan or coupe. in white or pink to hire for my wedding next june.

Try a classic car club, or the UK cadillac owners club is at
